Day 5 - Calica/Cancun

Chichen Itza - fascinating place.

This is the observatory...















This is the tower at one end of the ball field...
and the ballfield itself. You can stand in the center and hear a whisper at any point in the field. Notice the stone ring high up on the wall on the right. Archeologists believe that teams had to put a small ball through that ring... which is 12-15 feet off the ground. Not an easy feat. There were a lot of tour groups so I have no idea who the many people in the photos are.



After touring Chichen Itza, our group dined at a nearby restaurant where Mayan descendents in traditional costume did the "Bottle Dance" for us. The bottles were on trays placed on their heads and they danced and spun! When they stopped spinning around, the trays continued to spin on their heads. The woman in the photo was particularly adept at this, and was the hit of the show.
